First, the questions:

  • What’s holding you back from fulfilling your potential on your bike?
  • What part does psychology play in cycling?
  • If we are all built the same, what makes us different?

Join Lifecycol for 4 days of cycling and psychology that will make a difference to your cycling performance, whether you ride for pleasure or if you cycle competitively. This retreat is inclusive – it doesn’t matter what level of experience you have on the bike, as it is about the power of your mind and your own personal goals.

During this 4 day retreat, led by Tim Norton, a therapist since 1984 and senior lecturer in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) at The University of Cumbria, we will show you in a practical way how utilising the power of the mind can make a difference to your cycling. You can read all about Tim in his bio below. Tim will be supported by Lifecycol’s Jonno, a qualified Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner (NLP) and veteran of multi-day/week endurance cycling events,  who knows only too well the role that the mind plays in endurance cycling.

Writers from 50 years ago were extolling the virtues of the four S’s of cycling – Speed, Strength, Stamina and pSychology. Yet only the first three have been widely adopted and the fourth remains the least understood.

We want to help you focus on this vital element in order to excel.

The structure of each day will include:

  • Rides of up to 4 hours to put into practice the principles shared on the retreat – the precise duration and difficulty of the rides will be relevant to both the riders and the learning that day.
  • Daily post-ride yoga inspired stretch sessions led by Lifecycol’s Amy, focussing on the mind-body connection.
  • Introduction to identifying and challenging negative intrusive thoughts that impact on performance.
  • Developing alternative realistic thinking.
  • Applying all of the above in a practical way during the retreat.

About Tim Norton…

Can psychology help you ride harder, faster, longer?

Tim Norton will present and discuss principles from the field of CBT that will help you achieve your goals. The practicality of CBT is an ideal approach for coaching in sports.

Tim trained as a mental health nurse in the 1970s and became a therapist in 1984.  Since 2008 he has been a senior lecturer at The University of Cumbria.

Tim understands the value of talking therapy and its application to sport. His enthusiasm for cycling has grown alongside a career in psychology, resulting in a personal interest in, and an extensive knowledge of sports psychology.

Tim has time trialled at all distances, completing no less ten 12 hour time trials! This year he cycled solo from Athens in Greece to Santander in Spain. During this trip Tim met up with Jonno and they rode together for 9 days through the Pyrenees and Northern Spain.

Tim’s fun, personable and knowledgeable approach will help you to challenge your own thinking!

Venue, location, other info…

Lifecycol’s training retreats are based at a peaceful 6 bedroom Spanish villa with its own private pool, outdoor hot tub, table tennis and pool table, as well as the all-important sea views. All of these facilities will be at your disposal, and as we like to keep it personal, each retreat will have a maximum of 8 guests, allowing you not only plenty of space, but ample time to get to know your fellow athletes and hosts, and to pick the brains of the coaches at will!

The Alicante region is an awesome winter cycling destination for both pros and amateurs alike. The roads are silky smooth and there is real diversity of terrain all within a stone’s throw of the villa itself; you can ride the beach roads and take in the amazing sea views, or head inland to the vineyards and more mountainous landscape.

Food is of paramount importance to us! We love to eat and be appropriately fuelled in order to perform at our optimum level.

During your stay you will have a Lifecycol-style continental breakfast (including a selection of; home-made granola, fresh fruit, yogurt, local breads and pastries, juice, smoothies, home-made jams, eggs, artisan teas and coffees) and a tasty, nutritionally balanced 2-course informal meal provided for you.

Teas and coffees will be freely available throughout the retreat. Beer and wine will be available at a reasonable additional cost.

During your stay you will be led by an experienced team of athletes of differing sporting backgrounds and skill sets, giving you a premium training retreat experience that will be both memorable and will propel you through the remainder of winter and into the summer season full of new-found knowledge and enthusiasm.
